MACOMB, Ill. - No. 11 Mizzou softball finished a doubleheader sweep at Western Illinois with a six-inning, 12-4 win in the second game on Wednesday at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. The Tigers claimed a 10-5 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader. Both wins came under starts from senior Nicole Hudson (Webb City, Mo.), who improved her pitching record to 9-4 with the day's efforts. Sophomore SS Corrin Genovese (East Amherst, N.Y.) and senior catcher Jenna Marston (St. Louis, Mo.) led the Tigers offensively, batting 5-for-7 and 6-for-9, respectively.
Mizzou improved to 31-9 overall with the two non-conference wins, while Western Illinois dropped to 14-23 with the two losses.
Four Tigers recorded two-hit games in Mizzou's initial 10-5 win, with Genovese putting up a 2-for-3 performance. Freshman 2B Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.) batted 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot with three RBI and three runs scored. Marston and redshirt freshman OF Carlie Rose (Nixa, Mo.) both batted 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Crane scored two of her RBI with the play of game one, a two-run home run to left center field in the top of the seventh inning, scoring Genovese. The long ball was Crane's third of her freshman season.
Mizzou built a 5-0 lead in the second inning thanks to three hits and two errors committed by Western Illinois. Sophomore 3B Angela Randazzo (Poway, Calif.) netted two of her three RBI in the game during the inning on a single through the left side.
In game two action, Marston continued her hot hitting, batting a career-best 4-for-5 in the contest for Mizzou's second four-hit performance of the season. She recorded two RBI and two runs in the game, with two of her hits going for doubles.
Mizzou jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first inning of the second contest and never looked back, securing its13th run-rule win of its 2013 campaign.
Junior OF Mackenzie Sykes (Blue Springs, Mo.) batted a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, hitting a double and also earning a walk to score three runs. Her pristine performance capped a 4-for-7 overall doubleheader.
Both Genovese and Randazzo batted 3-for-4 in game two, with the former recording a season-best three RBI. Randazzo finished the doubleheader batting 4-for-7.
Freshman OF Sarah Moore (Chino Hills, Calif.) played a big role in the run-scoring of game two, batting 2-for-2 with a career-best four RBI to lead the Tigers.
Crane and Marston were active on the base paths, both going 2-for-2 in steals with a stolen base in each game.
Hudson pitched 5.1 innings in the initial win before throwing 4.0 innings in the second victory. Senior Lindsey Muller (Stilwell, Kan.) made relief appearances in both games for Hudson.
Mizzou next returns home to University Field for its final regular season action, a three-game series against SEC foe Tennessee from Friday, May 3-Sunday, May 5. The Friday game starts at 6 p.m., while the Saturday, May 4, contest will be televised nationally by ESPN at 6:30 p.m. The series concludes with a noon first pitch on Sunday for Senior Day. A ceremony will follow the Sunday game.
