Columbia, Mo.- Winning its fourth game in five outings by run rule, the 10th-ranked Missouri softball team bested Southern Illinois, 9-1, with the help of freshman Ashley Fleming's (Silex, Mo.) two run, walk off home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Missouri, now 34-5 on the year, is 10-2 at home on University Field and 28-3 in non-conference games.
Senior Stacy Delaney (Freeland, Mich.) was credited with the win, striking out nine batters in four innings of action. The right handed ace allowed only one hit, a leadoff single in the first, in her 14th start of the season. With a team-best 0.95 ERA, the two-time Big 12 Pitcher of the Week has notched 88 strikeouts in 81 innings in the circle. Delaney was relieved by freshman Kristin Nottelmann (Fenton, Mo.), with the Tiger newcomer allowing the lone SIU run, unearned, in the top of the fifth. Nottelmann struck out two of the four batters she faced.
The Tigers put up one run in their half of the first, second and third innings. Big 12 Player of the Week Megan Christopher (Wright City, Mo.) bucked the trend of scoring only one run an inning with her two run blast in the fourth. Christopher's seventh home run in 11 games, the Tiger catcher owns a .778 slugging percentage and is tied with teammate Micaela Minner (Sanger, Texas) for most home runs on the year. The full count crush was sent screaming over the head of SIU's centerfielder.
First baseman Marla Schweisberger (Raytown, Mo.) was first to score for Missouri in the bottom of the fifth. Reaching base on a single to left field, Schweisberger advanced on cleanup hitter Minner's single to second and scored on Gina Schneider's (Liberty, Mo.) single up the middle. Minner, who was standing at third, scored on a wild pitch by Katie McNamara, making the score, 7-1. The designated player, Fleming, knocked her fourth home run of the season on a full count pitch, bringing Missouri's third straight game to an end in five innings.
Missouri returns to Big 12 play with a two-game series against Oklahoma State, Friday, April 10, at 5:30 p.m. (CT) and Saturday, April 11, at 3:30 p.m. (CT). Friday's game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports. Check your local listings for details.
