San Diego, Calif. - Coming off of a Friday night nine inning victory over Oregon, the 12th-ranked Missouri softball team used only five frames to shut down Santa Clara, 10-0, improving to 12-0 on the year and 2-0 at the San Diego Classic Tournament. Junior pitcher Jana Hainey (Peculiar, Mo.) collected her fourth win of the season and combined with freshman Kristin Nottelmann (Fenton, Mo.) for her third shutout of 2009. The one hitter is Missouri's second of the season, while the shutout is the seventh.
The Tigers scored seven runs on eight hits in the top of the fifth inning, closing out the game by way of their fifth run rule of the season. Four Missouri players recorded doubles, with two hit in the fifth inning. Senior second baseman Andee Allen (Barnhart, Mo.) led off the fifth with a double down the left field line and scored from third after freshman Ashley Fleming (Silex, Mo.) was hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Redshirt junior Katie Milles (St. Louis, Mo.) ended the night with three RBI after powering a one out double down the left field line that brought home sophomore Kathryn Poet (Tujunga, Calif.) junior Julie Silver (Chesterfield, Mo.) and sophomore Marla Schwesiberger (Raytown, Mo.).
Senior Lindsey Ubrun (Riverside, Calif.) finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate. Ubrun doubled in the first and knocked a single in the third and fifth. The Missouri third baseman scored two runs, including the Tigers' first of the game when she advanced home from second on Schweisberger's single to centerfield.
Hainey made her third start in the circle and threw four complete innings, striking out four. The lone Santa Clara hit of the game came in the bottom of the third inning on a single to shortstop. Nottelmann entered the game in the fifth and forced three flyouts to secure Missouri's win.
