COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 6/4 Missouri Tigers (4-2) outlasted the No. 4/4 Michigan Wolverines (6-3) in extras in the opening game of the 2010 NFCA Leadoff Classic, winning by a 2-1 final.
Sophomore pitcher Chelsea Thomas went the distance for Mizzou, pitching all eight innings while giving up just one run on three hits. Thomas struck out 11 batters while allowing just one walk and three hits.
Junior Megan Christopher, who entered the weekend as the Big 12 Conference leader in batting average (.538) and second in the league with a .600 on-base percentage, got the Tigers on the board first with her solo home run over the left-center field fence.
The Wolverines answered with a solo home run of their own by third baseman Maggie Viefhaus in the bottom of the fourth, evening the game at 1-1.
Following the Michigan home run, Thomas settled in, sitting down the next 12 batters in a row. Of those 12 outs, four came at the hands of a strikeout. The Pleasantville, Iowa, native set down all three in order in the bottom of the sixth on strikes.
In the eighth, freshman Nicole Hudson singled to move freshman Jenna Marston over to third with no outs. Two batters later, sophomore Ashley Fleming reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Marston for the winning run. Thomas worked around a leadoff single in the bottom half to secure the victory, getting two strikeouts and a lineout to end the game.
Missouri will be back in action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic later tonight against Virginia Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
