Tigers Come From Behind for 6-3 Win over No. 10 Florida State
Feb. 12, 2005
Tallahassee, Fla. - The Missouri softball team improved to 3-0 on the season after holding off 2004 Women's College World Series (WCWS) qualifiers No. 10 Florida State, 6-3, at the Seminole Classic in the Seminole Softball Complex. In a come from behind win, the Tigers outpowered FSU for the second straight day to earn their third win of the two-day tournament. Left-handed ace Erica Peterson (Irving, Texas) was credited with the victory after tossing four innings and improves to 2-0 on the season.
Down two runs entering the top of the second inning, sophomore catcher Kathy Masterson (St. Louis, Mo.) cut Florida State's lead in half with her two-out run. Standing on second base after having taken first on a fielder's choice and forced to second after FSU pitcher Casey Hunter walked Sarah Stringer (Auxvasse, Mo.), Masterson rounded third and ran home on an error by third baseman Lesley Palmer.
FSU scored its third and final run of the game in the bottom of the second inning and was held to only one hit for the remainder of the game.
The Tiger offense came on strong in the fourth inning, scoring three runs from sophomore Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo.), junior Janessa Roening (Port Angeles, Wash.) and redshirt freshman Micaela Minner (Sanger, Texas). After walking leadoff hitter Bowers, FSU Head Coach JoAnne Graf pulled Hunter for freshman Tiffany McDonald. In her second turn at the plate, Roening singled advancing Bowers to second, with both runners taking an extra base on a passed ball. Minner dug in and notched her second RBI of the season after bringing in Bowers on a fielder's choice. Roening touched home on a wild pitch and Minner followed as senior shortstop Heather Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill.) grounded out to second base.
Peterson, a sophomore, plowed down five batters by strikeout and now holds a .79 ERA after 11.1 innings of work.
Missouri will take on Nicholls State in the final game of the Seminole Classic at 3:45 p.m. (CT).
