Soccer Builds True Community at Panda Cup

May 3, 2007

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri Soccer team had an impact on a community after participating in the Panda Cup tournament April 20-21 in Wylie, Texas. The squad participated in a Special Olympics Clinic, helping those of all ages to enjoy the sport of soccer. The weekend was filled with generous activities along with a highly competitive game against Notre Dame.

"By hosting Panda Cup, we have the opportunity to develop relationships that many cities our size do not have;" Mayor John Mondy said. "And, as we continue to grow, the doors that these relationships could open are immeasurable."

The unique tournament to conserve peace and friendship in the context of soccer provided an opportunity for the Tigers to give back to those who love the game. The team shared their passion and knowledge in a Special Olympics Clinic where they hosted relay races, shooting games and provided instructional opportunities.

"The weekend was a great soccer experience balanced well with the Special Olympics Clinic," Missouri Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "It provided an invaluable experience to our team. We were glad to be a part of it all."
