COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 10 University of Missouri women’s soccer team accepted an invitation to the state capitol on Wednesday, as the Missouri General Assembly recognized the team for its Big 12 Tournament Championship last Fall.
“Our program is honored to represent the Missouri athletic department and the University on this special occasion,” Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. “And we are grateful to the Missouri legislature for the opportunity to be honored in such a distinguished setting.”
After being presented formal resolutions in both the House of Representatives and Senate, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon spoke to the group to emphasize the values of competition and their achievement.
The Senate Resolution reads as follows:
Missouri Senate Resolution No. 214
Whereas, the members of the Missouri Senate feel it is altogether fitting and proper to pause from time to time to recognize Missouri athletic programs that have enjoyed great success and brought honor and glory to their schools, themselves, and the entire state; and
Whereas, the members now pause to recognize the University of Missouri women’s soccer team, which in 2008 ended the season with a 16-5-2 win-loss record and the title of Big 12 Tournament Champions, for the first time in program history and for the first time for any Missouri athletics team since 1997; and
Whereas, the 2008 Tiger women’s soccer team was a member of the NCAA Division I and was invited to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time overall and for the second consecutive season; and
Whereas, a Top 16 national seed for the first time, the 2008 Tiger women’s soccer team set school records for regular season victories with 13 wins, conference victories with 7 wins, points in conference play with 21 points, shutouts with 12 clean sheets, longest home winning streak at 9 games, consecutive games without being shutout at 20 games, overall wins with 16, home victories with 10, fewest goals allowed with 19, and goals against average at 0.80; and
Whereas, members of the champion Tiger women’s soccer team included Mallory Forst, Bree Thornton, Meghan Pfeiffer, Lindsay McCoy, Kari Adam, Mallory Stipetich, Crystal Wagner, Krista Kruse, Jessie Crabtree, Alysha Bonnick, Mo Redmond, Janelle Cordia, Michelle Collins, Tasha Dittamore, Kristin Andrighetto, Kelsey Blincow, Brittany Hopkins, Kat Tarr, Ashley Hamblin, Kelsey Stokes, Kendra Collins, Liz Gayer, and Candace Ruff:
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that we, the members of the Missouri Senate, Ninety-fifth General Assembly, applaud the history, goals, and accomplishments of the Tiger women’s soccer program and convey to all those involved with the 2008 team our most heartfelt congratulations upon earning the title of Big 12 Tournament Champions for the first time in the university’s history; and
