San Antonio, Texas - The University of Missouri women's soccer team, appearing in its second consecutive Big 12 Tournament championship match, dropped a 2-1 decision to Nebraksa at Blossom Soccer Stadium Saturday night. The loss dropped the Tigers to 14-7-1 on the season, while Nebraska, the No. 4-ranked team in the nation, improved to 20-1-1.
"We played the No. 4 team in the nation to a 90-minute soccer match tonight," Missouri Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "Our team absolutely put together a team effort."
The Tiger defense was outstanding, holding the high-powered Husker attack scoreless through halftime until the 71st minute. At 70:33 Lindsay Eddleman crossed the ball to Jenny Benson who flicked it to Breanna Boyd who hit the ball in to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead.
Only 50 seconds later Nebraska struck again. This time Benson and Isabelle Morneau combined to assist Christine Latham on the goal. Nebraska led 2-0 with less than 20 minutes remaining.
Missouri would not conceed, as Nikki Thole scored her school-record 21st goal in the 77th minute. The reenergized Tigers kept the pressure on to the final horn, but could not score to force overtime. The goal also gave Thole 50 points on the season, also a new school-record. Thole's four goals over three tournament matches earned her a spot on the All-Big 12 Tournament team for the season straight season.
Sunday looks to be a historical day for Missouri Soccer. At 9pm, the Tigers will likely receive the school's first invitation to the NCAA Division I Soccer Tournament.
