COLUMBIA, Mo. - Sophomore Abi Raymer and senior Taiwo Adeshigbin each notched goals as the No. 16 Mizzou soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Mississippi State Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. The win improved Mizzou's record to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Bulldogs fell to 7-7-1 and 0-7-1.
"We thought Mississippi State really challenged us today from a physical standpoint," Mizzou Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "We felt our group responded well and we are happy to earn a Sunday win."
Mizzou took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Raymer sent a low shot to the left corner of the net. The ball eluded a slew of Bulldog defenders and went past Mississippi State's goalkeeper for Raymer's sixth tally of the season. Junior Dominique Richardson earned her first assist of the year on the play.
Richardson and freshman Kaz James both narrowly missed scoring chances of their own late in the first half. Richardson unleashed a 35-yard bomb that caught the Bulldog keeper off guard but bounced off the left post. In the 36th minute, James corralled a loose ball off a shot from Adeshigbin and sent in a 15-yard shot, but her attempt sailed just to the right of the goal.
Adeshigbin entered the scoring column in the 65th minute to put Missouri on top 2-0. The senior dribbled the ball from the right sideline and uncorked a blast from just inside the right corner of the box. Her shot flew right by Mississippi State's goalie for her sixth goal of the season.
Missouri's offense continued to play well in search of another goal. Senior Haley Krentz had a breakaway opportunity but her shot sailed over the net. In the 69th minute, freshman Reagan Russell blasted a shot from the edge of the box but the ball hit off the crossbar.
The Tigers had a 36-11 overall shots advantage and a 13-6 edge in shots on goal in the contest.
Sauerwein made five saves in net for the Mizzou and earned her sixth shutout of the season.
Missouri hits the road next weekend with a contest against No. 17 Florida on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) in a game televised live on Sun Sports. The Tigers then play Alabama on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Noon CT.
