Mizzou Gymnastics Wins Tiger Cup
May 5, 2009
Columbia, Mo. - The Missouri gymnastics squad capped off arguably the best year in program history with another victory, this time in the first annual Tiger Cup competition. Developed by the Total Person Program and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the competition challenged Missouri's athletic squads to participate in the most community service, education and support activities to earn points for their teams. The gymnasts won by a mere 17 points of more than 6,000 earned throughout the year. The squad ultimately tallied 6,719.3 points. Men's Golf finished second with 6,702.8 points, while Women's Soccer finished third with 5,542.5 points. "The reason gymnastics was so successful can be attributed to their awesome athletic season, their dedication to academics, and the numerous hours they spent volunteering in the community," said Kim Martin, director of Life Skills at Missouri. "The final season stats, the team's date night, and the final Tiger Night competition really pushed them over the edge." The award was given as part of Monday night's inaugural ROARS awards, attended by 700-plus of Missouri's student-athletes and support staff. Head Coach Rob Drass cited the achievement as another example of the high caliber of success his squad has seen in 2009. As their reward for the achievement, the squad has earned a dinner cruise at Lake of the Ozarks Friday night. But the Tiger Cup was not the only award Missouri gymnastics took home on Monday night. Junior All-American Sarah Shire (Columbia, Mo.) was named the Female Athlete of the Year after an outstanding season, including a school record ten all-around titles. Senior Alicia Hatcher (Blue Springs, Mo.) added another quality award to her impressive resume, bringing home the "We are Mizzou" award presented by Dr. Bryan Maggard. Hatcher was named to the Mizzou '39 this year, as well as the Big 12 Chick-Fil-A Winter Community of Champions. She is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection and a member of the Mystical 7, as well as last year's Varsity M Student Athlete of the Year. And junior Liz Straatmann (Villa Ridge, Mo.) took home the Unsung Hero Award for her achievements and perseverance in the face of injury.
