COLUMBIA, Mo. - Seven members of the No. 18 Missouri gymnastics team earned a spot on the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics teams, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Missouri's seven selections, six on the first team and one on the second team, led the conference for the second straight season.
Pezzullo is now a three-time first team honoree while Abaray, Gilmore and Kluga made the first team for the second consecutive year. Bowman was a second team selection last season.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league gymnastics squad consists of 15 first team members combined with six on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Tigers host the 2007 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship at the Hearnes Center on Saturday, March 31 at 7 p.m. Mizzou will face off against No. 7 Nebraska, No. 10 Oklahoma and No. 15 Iowa State for its first Big 12 championship.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The No. 14 Missouri Tigers (10-3) held the lead after three rotations at No. 13 Illinois (9-7) but could not hold on for the win in the end. Missouri was looking to make it six straight against Illinois but the Illini took the meet 196.200-195.500. Senior All-American Sarah Shire (Columbia, Mo.) finished with an all-around score of 39.550 to take her eighth all-around crown of the season.
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 14 Missouri Tigers (10-2) have had two great weeks of performances with a season-high 196.875 at home and a 196.200 on the road and are looking to continue the trend Saturday at No. 13 Illinois (8-7). Missouri will compete in its final road meet of the regular season at the Illini's Gym Jam that is set to begin at 2 p.m.
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Big 12 Conference has named senior All-American Sarah Shire (Columbia, Mo.) the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the third straight week. It is the sixth time this season the honor has gone to Shire. She now has 13 Gymnast of the Week awards to her name.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The No. 18 Missouri Tigers (10-2) scored a new road-meet high 196.200 to take the win over the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks (12-3) 194.575 and the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves (2-13) 189.850. Senior All-American Sarah Shire (Columbia, Mo.) won her seventh all-around title of the season with a 39.675.
