COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior Mary Burke has been chosen as one of the top 23 finalists nationally for the 2012 AAI Award. The award, distributed by American Athletic, Inc., is presented to recognize outstanding athletes competing for championships at all levels.

Burke is one of three gymnasts in the Big 12 Conference who are among the top 23 award nominees. The ballot will be narrowed to six finalists after Friday, March 16. From there, the top female athlete will be chosen by coaches around the nation.

A consistent competitor for the Tigers, Burke boasts career-highs of 9.925 on vault and bars, 9.900 on the balance beam and 9.975 on floor. Her personal best in the all-around is a 39.475. Not only does Burke exhibit a strong work ethic in the gym, but she works hard to positively influence people outside of the gym as well.

Burke has proved herself to be a leader amongst all student-athletes at Mizzou, and she was rewarded for her efforts last year as she was named Mizzou's Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Burke plays a large part in organizing team community service activities as well as other team activities. Under her leadership, the Mizzou Gymnastics team has become a hardworking, dedicated family.

"We are honored to have someone like Mary Burke on our team," Head Coach Rob Drass said. "She works hard in her classes and at practice every day, I cannot think of anyone who deserves this recognition more than she does. We are excited for her nomination and wish her the best."
