Our trip to Pittsburgh definitely started out as an interesting one! Many of us thought we might end up at Pitt without two very important parts of our team: Ashley got sick the night before we left and Rob realized when we got to the airport in St. Louis that he had forgotten his I.D. at home. Somehow we all managed to get to Pitt safely even after two incredibly turbulent flights.
The day of the meet we went on the Duquesne Incline, a cable car that goes up a hill that overlooks downtown Pittsburgh. We all enjoyed that because it was different than our usual trips to the mall as our meet day team activity.
Then it was back to the hotel to get all dolled-up for the meet. We then went to lunch at The Spaghetti Warehouse where a few of our families were able to join us. It was nice to finally have a meet where families of the girls from the East Coast could easily get to. I know Danielle, Nikki and I were all excited to spend time with our families. (I know my parents had to bribe my little brother into driving five hours to see me compete, so thanks for coming John!)
The Tigers started off the competition against Pitt and Central Michigan on floor, which is the first time we've started on that event this season. We didn't have to count a fall on floor but the scores we counted were not quite as high as we'd hoped.
The same happened on vault, so after that rotation we were all fired up for bars to get the scores we knew we deserved. And boy did we deliver! The bars rotation was amazing and so much fun. Congrats to Ali for nailing a beautiful routine for a career high 9.875 to claim first place along with A and Hatch.
We ended the meet on beam, which could be a scary thing for most beam teams. But we didn't let that break us; and we hit seven-for-seven beam routines, including the exhibition spot! Amanda even decided to throw in a new skill, nice straddle jump, Pez! After beam we all crowded together for one for excited team hug. Not only did we win the team competition but we reached our goal of finally being able to drop our score from Cancun toward our RQS!
This weekend's competition will be a sad one as we say goodbye to our three wonderful seniors, so make sure you get out to the Hearnes Center Friday night at 7 p.m. to let them know how much you'll miss them!
Go Tigers!
