Tigers Ranked 12th after posting 194.100 at Bowling Green
Jan. 14, 2008
Columbia, Mo. - On the heels of an impressive performance at Bowling Green, the 2008 Tiger Gymnastics squad has moved up to 12th in the GymInfo Top 25. The poll is based on the average team scores and the Tigers 194.100 over the weekend was good enough to land them 12th.
The 12th place ranking is the highest the Tigers have been ranked following the opening weekend since 2004 and is the highest since 2006 when the Tigers were ranked seventh. In 2004, the Tigers opened with a 195.350, placing them 12th as well. The top 12 teams are selected to compete in the NCAA National Championships at the end of April, so the Tigers are right where they need to be in order to fulfill their season goal of qualifying for the championships.
Tiger newcomer Sarah Shire (Hartsburg, Mo.) is ranked among the nations elite as well. Shire posted a 39.150 at Bowling Green, ranking her 16th in the nation in the all-around, just behind Nebraska's Emily Parsons. Shire ranks eight in the nation on vault after posting a 9.875 and 13th on floor with the same score.
Freshman Alex Gold (Plano, Texas) is also among Tigers in the national rankings. Gold tallied a 9.850 on vault placing her 15th in the nation at that event.
The Tigers next meet will be on Friday, Jan. 18 when Iowa State comes to Columbia to take part in the fourth annual "Pink Out" meet. The meet will begin at 6:30 with doors opening at 5:30. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth, with $1 from each ticket being donated to Ellis Fischel Cancer Center for breast cancer research.
