Columbia, Mo. - The Big 12 Conference has named junior Sarah Shire (Columbia, Mo.) as Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and senior Alicia Hatcher (Blue Springs, Mo.) as Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week.

The awards come after strong season-opening performances from both gymnasts in a 195.050 to 193.175 Missouri victory over Iowa State.

Shire claimed the all-around title with a score of 39.350, including a 9.900 score on balance beam that tied her career high and won the event. She also placed first on the vault (9.875). This is the second weekly award for Shire -- she was named Co-Big 12 Gymnast of the Week after putting up a 39.500 against Centenary in February 2008. Shire was also named the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year for 2008, and was picked for the first-team All-Big 12 on vault and for the All-Big 12 Championship team on beam.

The performance last Friday pushed Shire to No. 5 in the country, tied for both No. 1 on the beam and No. 8 on the vault.

Hatcher won the bars title for the Iowa State meet with a 9.825, and placed second, just behind Shire, on beam after notching a 9.850. This is the second time Hatcher has been named Event Specialist of the Week -- she received the distinction in January 2008 after tallying season highs on bars, beam and floor against Nebraska. She went on to earn a first-team spot on both the All-Big 12 team and, for the second straight year, the All-Big 12 Championship team on the uneven bars. She was also named to the 2008 first team All-Big 12 Academic team for the second straight year.

Hatcher is now tied for No. 13 nationally on the vault and No. 21 on bars.

Both gymnasts will be in action this weekend and hoping to lead the now-No.10 Tigers to another victory, this time against the Arizona State Sun Devils. That meet will start at 7:30 p.m. CT from the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz. Stay with mutigers.com for news and updates throughout the week.
