COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 18 Missouri gymnastics team picked up a 194.025-191.025 win over Illinois at the Third Annual Pink Out on Friday night at the Hearnes Center. Sophomore Adrianne Perry won the all-around with a 39.150 and picked up three event titles on the evening.
In honor of the meet, both teams donned pink leotards as Mizzou teamed with University of Missouri Healthcare Ellis Fischel Cancer Center to support breast cancer research and awareness. One dollar from every ticket sold to the meet will be donated to breast cancer research.
"This meet was very solid," said Missouri Head Coach Rob Drass. "This is what we expected to do down in Cancun so it was a little bit of a shock that we didn't. I'm really proud of the way the girls came back. We had a long week between travel and getting back in the gym."
Vault proved to be Missouri's best event for the second meet in a row, as the Tigers notched a 48.650 in the opening rotation. Senior Whitney Crater and Perry scored 9.825 apiece to tie for second place, behind Illinois' Nicole Cowart, who scored a 9.850.
In the second rotation, Mizzou scored a 48.425 to improve upon last week's bars score by almost a full point. Perry took home the event title with a 9.775 while junior Julie Abaray and freshman Becky Scholle tied for second with 9.700s.
Perry and Abaray led the way for Missouri on beam, as the duo each scored a 9.800 to tie for first, while sophomore Alicia Hatcher came in third with a 9.775. Overall, the Tigers notched a 48.550 on the event.
Mizzou posted a 48.400 on floor in the final rotation to close out the night, where Perry picked up her third event title of the evening with a 9.750. Senior Amanda Pezzullo scored a 9.725 and Abaray had a 9.700 to finish in second and third, respectively.
"It's great to be back at home because it's so much easier to compete in front of a home crowd and on the equipment that you're used to," said Abaray. "I think we did a great job tonight, especially since we struggled last week. We really pulled it together, I'm very proud of our team."
"Right now we're just looking for consistency," said Drass. "We want to go out there and gain confidence, put the routines together, knock them down and then start to fine tune them. If we take one less step on each routine, that's two points, which puts us in the top five in the country."
The Tigers hit the road next weekend as the squad travels to Norman, Okla., to face Big 12 Conference foe No. 10 Oklahoma and Central Michigan on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. CT. Mizzou then returns to the Hearnes Center on Friday, Jan. 26 for a 7 p.m. CT meet against No. 7 Nebraska.
