Tigers Topple Bowling Green 194.100-188.825 in 2008 Season Opener

Bowling Green, Ohio. - The 2008 Missouri Gymnastics squad opened its season with a 194.100-188.125 victory at the Eppler Complex in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Tigers were led by Utah transfer Sarah Shire (Hartsburg, Mo.) who scored a 39.150 in the all-around competition. With the win, the Tigers move to 1-0 on the season. The Tigers score of 194.100 was the second best in the Big 12 Conference on the opening weekend, besting both Nebraska and Iowa State. Oklahoma scored a 195.125, the only score to top the Tigers in the opening weekend.

The score of 194.100 is the second highest opening day score in school history. The Tigers posted a 195.350 to kick off the 2004 season.

The 2008 season began on the bars for the Tigers. With aspirations of going out and hitting all six of their routines, the Tigers did just that in the first rotation. Led by junior and All-Big 12 performer Alicia Hatcher (Blue Springs, Mo.), who scored a 9.775, the Tigers put up a total of 48.300 on bars. Sophomore Becky Scholle (Chesterfield, Mo.) and junior Adrianne Perry (Columbia, Mo.) both tallied scores of 9.675 to help the Tigers.

In the next rotation, the Tigers headed to the vault where they put up more great scores. Highlighted by a slue of newcomers in the Tiger lineup, Shire, along with Lisa LaPerriere (Macomb, Mich.) and Alex Gold (Plano, Texas), helped the team put up a score of 49.025. LaPerriere put up a 9.725 in her first routine with the Tigers while Gold tallied a 9.850. Shire put up the highest score of the evening on vault at 9.875.

Scholle, a late addition to the vault lineup, continued her great meet by tallying a personal best score of 9,775, toppling her previous high of 9.725 set at Oklahoma last season.

 

 

The Tigers hit the floor in the third rotation leading 97.325 to 95.475. Shire shined once again for the Tigers, posting a new career high of 9.875, topping her previous best set at Utah against Nebraska last season. The Tigers also got big performances from Perry, who notched a 9.750 and senior Ashley Khederian (Carlisle, Mass.) who also posted a 9.750. Sophomore Danielle Guider (Nutley, N.J.) got the MU fans fired to kick things off on vault posting a 9.625.

With a big lead heading into the beam, the Tigers took control of the meet with several good performances. Sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Overland Park, Kan.), in her only event of the day posted a 9.725, a career best while at Mizzou. Hatcher had a great routine as well on beam as she posted a 9.675. Shire and Perry also posted high marks on beam with Shire scoring a 9.800 and Perry putting up a 9.700.

The Tigers featured two gymnasts that posted scores in the all-around competition, both Shire and Khederian. Shire won the all-around with a 39.150 with Khederian finishing right behind her in second with a 38.625. This meet marks the first time that Shire has competed as an all-arounder.

The Tigers next meet will be on Friday, Jan. 18 when Iowa State comes to Columbia to take part in the fourth annual "Pink Out" meet. The meet will begin at 6:30 with doors opening at 5:30. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth, with $1 from each ticket being donated to Ellis Fischel Cancer Center for breast cancer research.
