The Tigers dropped to Kansas in the Border Showdown on Sunday.
Jan. 15, 2012
Columbia, Mo.--Senior BreAnna Brock's career-high 26 points couldn't hold off Kansas as the Tigers fell to the Jayhawks 63-72. Junior Liz Smith also had a career game despite the loss, grabbing a career high six rebounds playing the most minutes she's seen on the floor all season.
The Tigers opened up their 80th meeting all time against the Jayhawks in a hard fought battle capped off with Brocks tying free throws to make it 6-6 five minutes into the first half. Both teams went shot for shot, but Kansas held the slight edge leading 22-21 after Brock's three point play from a foul in the paint. Mizzou fought hard in the paint with 16 of their 21 points coming from within the stripes.
The Tigers earned their first lead of the game off of a jumper from Senior Christine Flores, making it 23-22 with less than six minutes to play. Two straight three pointers from Brock and Freshman Morgan Eye helped Mizzou to extend its lead deep into the first half. The Jayhawks weren't phased though as they fought back to tie the score at 31 apiece. Kansas' field goal with only seconds left on the clock put the Tigers down 33-31 going into halftime.
Brock's 14 points and two rebounds led the team in the first half to keep the score close. Both Flores and Smith recorded four rebounds in the first half tying Smith's career high.
Kansas came out strong to start the second half getting a couple buckets to make the score 39-33. Four quick turnovers for the Tigers saw Kansas extending their lead to 12 as Mizzou was forced to call a timeout. A three pointer from Junior Sydney Crafton helped to pull Mizzou within 10 with eight and a half minutes left to play. That would be as close as Mizzou would get, though, as Kansas kept them at arms-length up 69-59 with a minute left. The Tigers played hard the last minute and netted a few buckets, but could not overcome the deficit. The Tigers lost 63-72 to Kansas.
Missouri's next matchup is at Texas A&M January 18 at 7 p.m. Be sure to follow the Tigers on Twitter @MissouriWBB for updates, and like them on Facebook www.facebook.com/MissouriWBB.
