Dec. 30, 2012
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The 2013 Southern Scuffle welcomes in 25 wrestling programs from around the nation, including four teams that placed in the top-5 in the 2012 NCAA Championships. Penn State, Minnesota, and Cornell all participated in last year's tournament, with Penn State winning the team title along with four individual brackets. Missouri's former Big 12 rival Oklahoma State will make their program debut in this year's tournament. The USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll ranks Penn State, Oklahoma State, and Minnesota 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively, with Cornell coming in at number-8. Missouri is tied for the six-spot with Illinois.
This year's Scuffle will feature 34 wrestlers ranked in the top-10 nationally with five ranking atop their weight class. The Tigers have participated in the event for the past, taking third in last year's tournament. They won the team title the 2006-07 campaign.
Wrestling kicks off on New Years Day at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. It will continue on January 2nd with the semifinals and finals. 2013 will mark the second year that the Scuffle will be held at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The event migrated to UTC from its previous location at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
