Dec. 29, 2009
Evanston, Ill. – The Missouri wrestling team closed out the first session of the 47th annual Midlands Championships in third place with 41.5 team points, while No. 1 ranked Iowa stands in first with 46.5 points followed by Iowa State with 42.5 points. Held in the Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern University, session two is slated to begin at 7 p.m. (CT).
Eight Tiger grapplers have advanced through the championship bracket of their respective weight class, seven seeded among the top-10. Of the 17 Missouri wrestlers competing in the two-day tournament, all but three remain alive in either the championship or wrestle-back brackets.
No. 1 seeded, and ranked, senior Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) stands at 2-0 on the day in the 184 pound weight class. Askren shut out his opening round opponent, Travis Rutt of Wisconsin, 4-0 and followed with a 17-3 win by major decision over Brice Arand of Oregon State.
Two-time All-American Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) extended his win streak to 18 straight after earning a win by default over Harvard’s Adam Hogue. Marable, now with 94 wins on his career, is seeded fourth in the 165 pound bracket and will battle with Big 12 foe Mike Finch of Iowa State with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.
Missouri’s heavyweight contingent of fourth-ranked and seeded Dominique Bradley (Blue Springs, Mo.) and sixth-seeded Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo,) each won their first matches of the morning by fall. Together, the Missouri wrestling team won seven matches by fall, the fastest clocked by 197-pounder Brent Haynes (Kansas City, Mo.) in 1:07. Haynes, a redshirt freshman, pinned Jeff Schuller of Cleveland State.
Competing unattached, Kyle Bradley (St. Peters, Mo.) suffered a first round loss, but rebounded with back-to-back victories including a win by major decision, 12-1, over DaMonte Riley of Lincoln. Bradley collected his second win of the day by way of a 7-4 decision over Matt Bradley of Rider.
