Raymond Jordan Named Wooden Cup Semi-Finalist

Nov. 20, 2008

Columbia, Mo. -Senior wrestler Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) was named one of 21 semi-finalists for the fifth annual Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. The Wooden Cup is given to a collegiate and a professional athlete who have made the greatest positive influence in the lives of others. Jordan was the only wrestler to make the list of semi-finalists and one of six Big 12 athletes recognized. Each individual was nominated by members of their athletic department and community.

Founded by Athletes for a Better World (ABW), a non-profit organization committed to changing the culture of American sports, the Wooden Cup is unique in that it is open to athletes in all collegiate and professional sports. Nominations come from every conference in the NCAA.

A 2008 All-American, Jordan took fifth in the 184 pound weight class while wrestling at the NCAA Championships in the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Jordan owns a 90-24 record that includes back-to-back wins in Missouri's duals against Lock Haven and Bucknell this past weekend. Entering Missouri's home opening dual with Hofstra, Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2p.m. (CT), Jordan is ranked as high as third in the 174-pound weight class.

Recognized for his exemplary skills off the mat, Jordan is the president of Missouri's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and has volunteered hundreds of hours to the community during his five years at the University. Last season, Jordan and another Missouri student-athlete attended the NCAA Leadership Conference. Upon returning to Missouri, the duo helped set up a service project with the Greek community to help raise donations for the Central Missouri Food Bank. This is just a small example of what Jordan has done to help his surrounding community.

From the list of 21 semi-finalists five finalists were selected, Ryan Adler of Hobart College (Ice Hockey), Andrew Berry of Harvard (Football), Lauren Mioton of Purdue (Basketball), Tim Tebow of Florida (Football) and Rob Whiting of Vanderbilt (Cross Country). Recipients of the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup are chosen by a committee chaired by Vincent Dooley, former University of Georgia athletic director, and other distinguished individuals involved in athletics across the country.
