Wrestling Team Hosts Local Charity Event

Nov. 19, 2010

COLUMBIA, Mo. - On Oct. 16, the Missouri wrestling team hosted a UFC Watch Party at Mizzou Arena’s prestigious Clinton Club in an effort to raise shoes for the Shoeman Water Projects. Students were invited to join the wrestling team in watching UFC 120 where Michael Bisping defeated Yoshihiro Akiyama on the main card. Admission was simply one pair of used shoes to donate. After the event was through, over 80 pairs of shoes were collected.

The Shoeman Water Projects takes used or new donated shoes from schools, churches, businesses and special events and exports them to retailers in developing countries. These retailers sell the shoes at low cost to those in need, providing both jobs and footwear. A portion of the profit the retailers make goes to water resources within the community, such as drilling equipment for digging wells and water purification systems.

During the week of Nov. 1, the wrestling team also assisted the Shoeman Organization in setting up collection bins throughout the MU campus in every freshman dormitory. Students were able to donate extra shoes in the 21 convenient locations.
