Tigers Compete at UCM Open

Warrensburg, Mo. - Five Missouri wrestlers brought home top-six finishes at the annual University of Central Missouri Open, Nov. 16, in Warrensburg, Mo. Tiger senior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) took first in the 157 pound weight class finishing the day with a perfect 4-0 record, while teammate Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) took second wrestling at heavyweight. Two Missouri grapplers, redshirt freshman Patrick Wright (Grand Ledge, Mich.) and freshman Brent Haynes (Kansas City, Mo.) finished the day in fifth in the 157 and 184 pound weight class, respectively while freshman Taylor Crane (Columbia, Mo.) finished sixth at 133 pounds. Both Haynes and Crane wrestled unattached.

Opening the tournament with a 20-5 win by technical fall in 5:46, seventh-ranked Chandler advanced through the championship bracket earning a 13-1 win by major decision over Nik Turner (Oklahoma City) and 7-3 decision over Neil Erizman (Oklahoma State). Chandler squared off with Oklahoma State's No. 13 Newly McSpadden in the final bout of the bracket where he held on for a 3-2 win. Over the past three years, Chandler and McSpadden have battled five times, with Chandler earning all five victories.

Fifth-ranked Ellis recorded four straight wins by fall making a statement on his way to the championship bout. Ellis' fastest fall of the all-day tournament came in his opening round match against Mark Skogrand of Missouri Valley. Ellis turned and stuck Skogrand in 1:10. In his second match, Ellis stuck Justin Virtue of Cumberland in 2:50 and followed with a fall in 6:02 over Oklahoma's Adam Barnette. Competing in the semi-finals, Ellis pinned Zak Adomanie of McKendree in 4:29. Ellis' final bout of the day came against No. 1 ranked Jerrod Rosholt of Oklahoma State. The Big 12 competitors battled back and fourth for seven minutes, with Rosholt managing the 4-1 victory.

 

 

As a team, the Tigers managed 15 falls on the day. The fastest pin was recorded by sophomore Ashtin Primus (South Connelsville, Pa.) in 42 seconds over Ganbayer Gana of Colby Community College. Primus also recorded Missouri's second fastest fall of the day, 51 seconds over Brandon Pinto.

Wright opened his redshirt freshman campaign in Warrensburg and finished the day with a 5-2 record that included an opening round win by fall in 4:08.

Coming off of a fourth place showing at the Lindenwood Open, Haynes met with tougher competition and finished the day in fifth place. Haynes managed back-to-back wins before falling to Oklahoma State's No. 1 seeded Chris McNeil. Despite the heated contest, Haynes lost, 8-6. Haynes battled through the consolation bracket collecting two wins by technical fall in route to his fifth place finish.

Crane collected his second top-six tournament finish of his still young campaign wrestling in the 133 pound weight class. Crane finished with a 5-3 record that included two wins by fall, the first recorded in 2:39.
