COLUMBIA, Mo. - Continuing "Welcome Week" for the Missouri wrestling program, Tiger Style welcomes in three-time Arizona state champion Robbie Mathers, and Nick Boone, a top-recruit from Cabell Midland High in West Virginia.
Mathers joins the squad from Desert Vista High School, where he won three individual titles in three different weight classes. Mathers stood atop the podium three-consecutive times in his sophomore (119), junior (126) and senior seasons (132) after taking third in the 103-pound weight class as a freshman. His first place finish as a senior helped the Thunder from Desert Vista to a third place team-trophy in 2012.
In 2011 and 2012, the Arizona-native competed nationally at the Fargo Asics Nationals Junior Freestyle Championships, where he finished in sixth and third, respectively. Mathers went 11-1 in the 2012 Championship, with his only loss coming via a tie-breaker against the defending national champion.
With Mathers making his way to Columbia from the Southwest, Head Coach Brian Smith and company looked to the East coast to bring in Nick Boone.
Boone, a 174-pounder from Cabell Midland, comes to the Tigers as one of the top recruits from West Virginia. Boone's highest finish in state was a runner-up finish in 2011 at 160 pounds. Despite being the No. 1 grappler at 170 pounds in West Virginia, Boone finished fifth at state in his senior season, a year that was limited due to a knee injury he suffered in the 2012 Class AAA football state title. Boone played linebacker for the Knights.
