Six Tigers Advance Through Championship Bracket

March 20, 2008

St. Louis, Mo. - Six of Missouri's seven NCAA qualifiers advanced in the championship bracket of their respective weight class in the first session of the Division I Wrestling Championships held at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.  All six grapplers will resume championship competition tonight at 6:30 p.m. (CT).  The Tigers currently stand in ninth place in the team competition with 12 ½ points, while Iowa leads the pack with 19.

Senior Tyler McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) began his third run at a 133-pound NCAA title.  Entering the tournament as one of two unseeded Tiger wrestlers, McCormick paired with Tyler Dillashaw of Cal State Fullerton and won his first match of the day, 5-2.  Scoring the only points of the first period, McCormick took down the Titan one minute and nine seconds into the match and chose down to start the second period.  Escaping on the option, McCormick was taken down and escaped one final time to hold on for the lead.  McCormick rode out Dillashaw wracking up 1:41 of riding time for the three-point advantage.  The Tiger grappler will take on No. 2 seeded James Kennedy of Illinois in the evening session.

Up next for Missouri, 157-pounder Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) held off David Nakasone of Lehigh, 5-3, to advance to his next Championship round match.  Making his third NCAA appearance, 10th-seeded Chandler shut out the Mountain Hawk for five minutes and 10 seconds before allowing him an escape at the 1:50 mark.  Chandler gave up a takedown 16 seconds into the third period but escaped and held on for the win.

Following Chandler on mat No. 5, sophomore Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) made his National Tournament debut and won his bout with Luke Manuel of Purdue, 4-2, at 165 pounds.  Marable extended his streak of not being taken down in a match to 12-straight bouts and earned one point for Manuel's technical violation in which he pushed Marable from center circle onto the edge of mat No. 7.

Missouri's 184-pounder, junior Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.), dominated his opening round opponent, Matthew Gevelinger of Brown, 23-7, for a win in 5:30 by technical fall.  The bonus point win was Missouri's first of the afternoon.  Throughout the match, Jordan took down Gevelinger nine times, scored four points by nearfall and accumulated 4:05 of riding time to end the match early.

Sophomore Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) recorded the Tiger's second bonus point win of the afternoon managing a 15-5 win by major decision over Joe Fagiano of Indiana.  The victory was Askren's second of the season over Fagiano, as the two grapplers last met at the NWCA National Duals, Jan. 12 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  Askren took down Fagiano six times in the match for the second-most takedowns on the day by a Tiger wrestler.

Border war opponents Missouri and Illinois went head-to-head in the Tiger's final match of the first session.  Wrestling at heavyweight, Mark Ellis squared off with John Wise of Illinois and recorded a 5-4 win by decision.  Scoreless through the first three minutes of action, Wise chose down to start the second period and escaped for the early lead.  Ellis returned the Illini wrestler to the mat but allowed Wise an escape and takedown to fall behind, 4-2, heading into the third.  Ellis escaped and recorded a takedown on the edge of the mat with 14 seconds left on the clock to win his second NCAA match of his career.

Tiger senior Josh Wagner (Milton, Wis.) suffered a loss at 149 pounds and will compete in the consolation bracket tonight at 6:30 p.m.  Wagner was down one point heading into the third period with Lock Haven's Matthew Flittery and despite a two-point reversal, Wagner was unable to take the lead, losing his match, 11-6.
