Session One

Omaha, Neb. - Four Missouri wrestlers advanced in the championship bracket at the NCAA National Championships in Omaha, Neb. Missouri is currently tied for tenth in the team standing with Oklahoma and Minnesota. Each school has 11 points, while team leader Iowa has 21.5 points.

Junior Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) took the mat first for the Tigers, facing the No. 1 seed, Cornell's Kyle Dake. Dake scored the first points of the match taking Schavrien down in the first period at the 1:45 mark. Escaping at 1:15, the score was 2-1. Schavrien chose down to start the second period, and couldn't get off bottom. Dake earned his first escape of the match in the third period at :36, giving Schavrien little time to make a move. With 2:02 of riding time, the Cornell freshman took a 4-1 decision.

No. 3 seed Nick Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) was upset by Stanford's Nick Amuchastegui, 4-1. This is the second consecutive year Marable has faced the Cardinal, and been beaten in the opening round. Now 33-4 on the season, he is set to face Pennsylvania's Stephen Burak tonight.

After a rough start for Missouri, the Tigers got going, taking the remaining four matches of the session.

Sophomore Dorian Henderson (Columbus, Ga.) put the first points on the board for the Tigers, earning his first win in two trips to the NCAA's. Henderson edged Bucknell's Shane Riccio, 3-2. Henderson will face Big 12 competitor No. 4 seed Stephen Dwyer tonight in the second round.

Senior two-time All-American Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) made quick work of his opponent, earning his first win by fall of the season in 1:38 over Stanford's Zack Giesen. With the win, the 184-pounder becomes the 18th member of the Tigers' 100-win club.

Highlighting the afternoon matches, redshirt freshman Brent Haynes (Kansas City, Mo.) took an 18-6 major decision over Ohio University's Eric Schuth. This was Haynes' first match at an NCAA Championships, and he will now face Wisconsin's Trevor Brandvold.

Defending National Champion Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) earned a 5-2 decision over Brendan Barlow of Kent State in sudden victory. In a closely contested match, the two countered each other's move keeping the score tied until the end. The two began the sudden victory period in a neutral position, and Ellis scored a takedown in :16 for the win.

Session two, which includes wrestlebacks as well as championship competition will begin at 6:30 p.m. Stay tuned to mutigers.com, and the wrestling live blog for updates.
