COLUMBIA, Mo. - After a first place finish at the Southern Scuffle and a dominating 22-7 win over Iowa State's Cole Shafer in Sunday's dual, Missouri's Brent Haynes has been named as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, announced Monday. It is the first career honor for Haynes and the second time this year that Mizzou has earned the award, as sophomore Alan Waters was recognized on Dec. 11. This is the first time since the 2008-09 campaign that the Tigers have had multiple winners in the same year.

Haynes opened 2012 by finishing in first place at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by UTC in Chattanooga, Tenn. He started the tournament with back-to-back first period falls, pinning Ryan Malo of Virginia in 2:08 and Navy's Colynn Cook in 1:00. In the quarterfinals, Haynes dominated No. 4 Matt Powless of Indiana, scoring a 15-0 technical fall to move into the final four. From there, Haynes knocked off No. 2 Sonny Yohn of Minnesota by a 6-0 decision to advance to the championship. He was scheduled to take on his third straight top-four grappler in No. 1 Cam Simaz (Cornell), but an injury to Simaz forced him to forfeit to Haynes. The Tiger junior didn't allow a single point at the tournament.

The two-time NCAA qualifier kept the momentum going at Sunday's dual against Iowa State, where he picked up a technical fall win over Shafer, his second technical fall victory over the Cyclone grappler this season. Scoring three reversals and six near falls, Haynes defeated Shafer by a 22-7 final in 6:29. Back in December, Haynes knocked off Shafer 15-0 in Columbia. Haynes hasn't allowed a point since his match on Dec. 9 at Kent State.

Haynes and the Tigers (6-1) head east this weekend for the Virginia Duals, where they'll compete with 13 other squads in the tournament. Missouri received the No. 1 seed and a first round bye. They will face the winner of Campbell/North Dakota State at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13. For more information, stay tuned to mutigers.com.
