Columbia, Mo. –The fifth-ranked Missouri wrestling team held its annual Black and Gold wrestle-off’s in the Hearnes Center, with the 15-member Gold Team holding on for a one point, 25-24, win.  Seven members of Missouri’s Gold Team recorded wins, with two Tigers, sophomore transfer Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) and junior Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) managing bonus point victories.  Missouri heavyweight Dominique Bradley (Blue Springs, Mo.) collected the final win of the evening, a 3-2 victory in two overtimes over the Gold Team’s junior Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.).  Despite Bradley’s win for the Black Team, the Gold team walked away with their third consecutive victory in the intersquad competition.

The Black Team, led by Assistant Coach Lee Pritts and Volunteer Assistant Ben Askren, took the early lead on the heels of freshman Nathan McCormick’s (Leawood, Kan.) 7-3 win by decision over newcomer Taylor Crane (Columbia, Mo.) at 133 pounds.  McCormick went on to wrestle Schavrien later in the afternoon and suffered an 8-0 loss, the first bonus point match of the day.  Schavrien and McCormick were scoreless through the first period, with Schavrien managing a reversal in the second for the two point lead.  In the final two minutes of regulation, Schavrien tallied two three-point nearfalls for the win.

Ranked No. 1 in the nation at 165 pounds, junior Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) scored a 15-4 win by major decision over Gold Team member Todd Porter (House Springs, Mo.).  Marable notched two takedowns in the first period, allowing Porter only one escape to end the first three minutes of action.  Choosing down to start the second, Porter escaped cutting Marable’s lead in half, but was quickly returned to the mat giving Marable the 6-3 advantage.  Advancing into the third period, Marable chose down and escaped in four seconds, took Porter down twice and held him on his back for a three-point nearfall.  By the end of the match, Marable had tallied 1:31 of riding time.

Askren recorded the final bonus point win of the day, pinning Black Team member Jake Glore (Imperial, Mo.) in 3:16 in the 197 pound competition.  Ranked as high as fifth in the nation at 197 pounds, Askren held a 6-2 lead over Glore before turning him for the win by fall.

Senior Andrew Sherry (Sewickley, Pa.) battled with redshirt freshman Max Shanaman (Blair, N.J.) and won a 2-1 decision in the 149 pound weight class.  Three of the day’s matches were determined by one point.

Wrestling at 157 pounds, senior Emanuel Brooks (Cahokia, Ill.) recorded a 3-2 win over senior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.).  Brooks and Chandler were scoreless through the first period, with Brooks held to an escape in the second.  Chandler chose down to start the third period and escaped but was returned to the mat by Brooks for the win.

Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith and the Tigers will open the 2008-09 season on the road when they battle with Lock Haven Saturday, Nov. 15, beginning at 6 p.m. (CT).  Missouri’s first home dual of the season is set for Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. when the Tigers challenge Hofstra in the Hearnes Center.
