Kyle Bradley defeated No. 4 James Green and will now face David Bonin in a rematch of this year's MAC Championship bout.
March 21, 2013
DES MOINES, Iowa - Seven Missouri Tiger wrestlers have moved on in their respective championship brackets after the first session of the 2013 NCAA Championships. Of the seven remaining, Alan Waters, Nathan McCormick, Mike Larson, and Dom Bradley are all seeded. Minnesota (8) is the only program with more than the Tigers, with Oklahoma State and Iowa also having seven. The Tigers sit in eighth place after the first of six sessions with 8.0 team points.
Drake Houdashelt and Kyle Bradley both pulled off upsets at 149 and 157. Houdashelt started the second period on top against No. 11 Andrew Alton of Penn State. Houdashelt managed to tilt Alton for a quick three-second count and a two-point nearfall that gave the Mizzou sophomore a 4-2 lead. He added an escape in the third and a ride time point for 1:57 of advantage to take the bout 4-1.
Kyle Bradley followed suit immediately after Houdashelt's win with a 6-5 upset in tiebreaker 2 over No. 4 James Green of Nebraska. Mizzou's junior escaped and then was able to keep Green down in the second tiebreaker period. Bradley had a 5-3 lead in the first tiebreaker after a two-point nearfall but fell victim to a Green takedown as time ran out in the second 30-second tiebreaker period. Next up for Bradley is Northern Iowa's David Bonin in a rematch of this year's MAC Championship bout.
Nick Hucke lost a heartbreaker to No. 3 Michael Mangrum of Oregon State. In what was a very confusing bout, Hucke had a 2-1 lead after a challenge revoked a Mangrum takedown. Per NCAA rules, should a call be overturned, the wrestlers are required to reset the bout in the neutral position. Because of this, a true takedown by Mizzou's senior 141-pounder was also wiped off the scoreboard.
After resetting at 0-0, Hucke and Mangrum battled to a tie after seven minutes and went to SV1. Hucke had a hold of Mangrum's leg in the first sudden victory, but Mangrum jumped out of the circle, warranting a stalling call. Off of the reset, Mangrum connected on a takedown with just seconds remaining.
At 197 pounds, No. 12 Brent Haynes dropped a close bout in sudden victory 3 to Jackson Hein of Wisconsin, 5-3.
Wrestling resumes in Des Moines, Iowa, at 6:30 p.m. CT Thursday night. Fans can watch Mats 3, 4, 5 and 6 live on ESPN3.com.
