Third-ranked Oklahoma State (12-2-1) proved to be too much for the Tigers, as the Cowboys posted a 22-9 victory at the Hearnes Center in Columbia Sunday afternoon.
On Missouri's Senior Day, honoring seniors Maxwell Askren, Mark Ellis, and Nick Marable, Oklahoma State took control of the dual, winning five straight matches in front of a Missouri crowd totaling 1,169.
Beginning at 125, the Cowboys took the first five matches of the afternoon, one by major decision, putting Oklahoma State ahead 18-0 entering the bottom half of the lineup.
Fifth-ranked Nicholas Marable brought the five-match Cowboy winning streak to a halt at 165 pounds. The Collierville, Tenn. Native scored one takedown and one escape to win 3-1 in sudden victory, giving Missouri their first team points of the afternoon.
Third-ranked Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) claimed a win at 184 pounds over No. 10 Clayton Foster, With no action through the first two periods, the crowd cheered Askren on in the final period, helping him to gain a reversal and two point nearfall to take the lead 4-2. Gaining a point for his 2:27 riding time, Askren took the match, 5-3.
With the crowd getting loud after Askren's win, redshirt freshman Brent Haynes (Kansas City, Mo.) carried the momentum and energy of the crowd into his match at 197 pounds. Down 4-7 at the end of the second period, Haynes began the third period on the bottom. Escaping the hold just three seconds into the period, Haynes earned a takedown at 1:36, evening the score at 7. With two minutes of riding time, Haynes took an 8-7 win over Oklahoma States fifth-ranked Alan Gelogaev. Haynes' victory was his first in Big 12 action, and moves the redshirt freshman to 24-10, with a 7-6 record in duals.
Moving to heavyweight, fifth-ranked Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) was defeated by the nation's top-ranked competitor, Jared Rosholt, 3-2. Ellis scored an escape at the end of the second period, and the beginning of the first, but saw his rally fall short as the Cowboys extended their lead and won the match, 22-9.
Missouri continues their Big 12 season next week when the Tigers travel to No. 2 Iowa State, facing the Cyclones on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.
