LINCOLN, Neb. - Competing in its second Big 12 dual of the season, 11th-ranked Missouri (7-3-1, 0-1-1) suffered a 22-13 loss to second-ranked Nebraska (11-2, 2-0), in front of a record-setting 3,252 fans in The Coliseum. Sophomore Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) collected Missouri's only win in one of three overtime bouts on the night, extending the match to nine minutes before winning, 3-2.
Down 4-0 after suffering a loss at 174 pounds, the opening match of the night, fourth-ranked junior Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) helped bring the Tigers even with Nebraska managing an 11-4 win by major decision over No. 10 Vince Jones. Scoreless through the first period, Jordan recorded four takedowns in the final four minutes of action, allowing Jones only three escapes. In Jordan's last two matches, he has collected 11 takedowns and outscored his opponents, 28-9. Tonight's win was his 11th straight of the season and also his 11th bonus point win of the year.
Following on the heels of Jordan's victory, Missouri scored its second win of the night in a hard-fought battle that gave ninth-ranked Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) the 13-11 win over No. 10 Craig Brester. Tied at seven heading into the third period, Askren scored six points in the final 1:30 of action, winning the match with a two-point nearfall, with two seconds remaining in the bout.
Junior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) snapped Missouri's five-match losing streak, winning a 6-2 decision over No. 16 Chris Oliver. Entering the bout, No. 15 Chandler and Oliver stood tied at two wins apiece with tonight's victory giving Chandler the 3-2 advantage in three years of competition. Scoreless through the first period, Chandler chose down to start the second and escaped in nine seconds for the first point of the match. With 19 seconds remaining in the period, Chandler scored a takedown to take a 3-0 lead into the final period. Oliver chose down to start the third and Chandler turned the Cornhusker, putting him on his back for a three-count. Oliver recorded a reversal to bring the match within two points, but was unable to pull off the win.
In second-ranked Marable's third overtime bout of the season, the sophomore collected Missouri's fourth win of the night, 3-2, and first in overtime. In the fifth match of the night to go scoreless through the first period, ninth-ranked Dwyer escaped after choosing down to start the second. Marable escaped in the third after choosing down. The grapplers scrambled through the first one-minute sudden victory period with Marable choosing down in the first 30-second segment. Marable managed a reversal with two minutes left on the clock and although Dwyer got an escape four seconds into the second 30 second period, Marable came out the victor.
"I couldn't be prouder of the way the guys fought tonight; it was an all-out war," said Head Coach Brian Smith. "Everyone saw the Tyler McCormick of old tonight, the one that was on the podium at Nationals last year, and Nick Marable won the match of the night. It was a fitting end to the dual."
Missouri will return home and host No. 19 Oklahoma, Friday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. (CT) in the Hearnes Center. The dual runs in conjunction with Missouri gymnastics team who will take on Centenary College in the second annual Beauty and the Beast event. Following Friday's dual, Missouri will take on Oregon State in its final home dual of the year. Missouri's six seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the 2 p.m. (CT) dual.
