The Tigers had 13 Tigers place in two open tournaments over the weekend, eight of which are freshmen
Cody Johnston, Johnny Eblen, and Devin Mellon all won titles Sunday at the University of Central Missouri.
2013-14: In his second year with the Tigers, Whitener yet again competed in five tournaments at 157 pounds, picking up eight wins on the season. Splitting his matches of the day at 3-3, Whitener placed sixth at the UCM Open. The following week, he picked up another two wins at the Joe Parisi, first by major decision against Josh Reid, and then by fall (4:46) against Trevor Aspinall of Missouri Valley College. At the Kaufman-Brand Open, he won his first and last matches to take fifth overall. Nine of Whitener's losses were by three or fewer point decisions.
2012-13: Patrick Whitener began his Tigers career by competing in five tournaments in the 157-pound weight class during his redshirt season. Whitener won his first match when he defeated Lindenwood's Cullen Halpin 3-2 at the Joe Parisi Open. Patrick then earned a fifth place title in the Roger Denker Open with three victories. Twelve of Whitener's 15 matches were decided by three or fewer points.
High School: Whitener wrestled for McCluer North High School, where he capped off his career with a second place at state during his senior year, posting a record of 37-9 at 145 pounds. He won 93 matches over his last three seasons, all at the 145 pound class. In 2009, Whitener took second at the Midwest Nationals in folkstyle. He earned letters in high school for wrestling, football and track. Academically, he earned the Silver Card Award in 2009, 2010 and 2011 for having a grade point average above 3.20.
Personal: Patrick was born to Charles and Patricia Whitener on March 15, 1993 in St. Louis, Mo., and is the oldest of six. He is studying electrical engineering and hopes to coach wrestling and travel after college.
