NCAA Wrestling Championships

School Qualifiers:

10 - Iowa State
8 - Missouri
8 - Oklahoma State
6 - Nebraska
6 - Oklahoma

The top three finishers in each weight class automatically qualify for the NCAA Wrestling Championships (a total of 30 Automatic Qualifiers).

The head coaches only would meet immediately upon the completion of the Big 12 Championship and use the following procedure, administered by a Conference liaison, to determine the remaining eight wildcards and two alternate slots for the NCAAs:

  • Each coach would receive a ballot listing all individuals from the Big 12 Championship that did not automatically qualify for NCAAs.
  • Prior to voting, each coach would be allowed to address the group and discuss the merits of his student-athletes who are on the ballot. He would be allowed 90 seconds for each of his student-athletes. After speaking on behalf of his last student-athlete on the ballot there will be a two-minute Question & Answer.
  • Coaches would then vote by ranking their choices. The highest number of points available corresponds to the number of wrestlers on the ballot. Coaches would assign points in descending order with their top choice receiving the highest total (if 15 wrestlers are on the ballot, a coach would assign 15 points to his top selection, 14 for second, 13 for third, etc.). Voting would be open.
  • Wildcards and alternates would be determined by tabulating all ballots. Scores would be posted on a display board with the high and low score for each wrestler dropped. The remaining three scores would be totaled. Individuals with the eight highest point totals receive wildcard berths, with the next two highest, designated as alternates.
  • If necessary, the process would be repeated to break ties at positions 8, 9, and/or 10. The numerical amount of points to be assigned would match the number of student-athletes tied at the aforementioned positions in the original vote (e.g. if after the initial vote three individuals are tied at position #8, coaches would vote on those three by ranking them 3-1).

Additionally, the following guidelines were established when presenting student-athlete information:

  • Consensus national ranking (March);
  • Season record, including quality wins; wins over ranked opponents (and ranking of those opponents);
  • Number of non-quality losses; and
  • Fourth/Fifth-place finish is not as important as strength of that weight class.
