INDIANAPOLIS - Three members of the Mizzou men's swimming program and an assistant coach are competing in this week's 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. Sophomores Eegan Groome (Shreveport, La.) and Sam Tierney (Plano, Texas), freshman Max Grodecki (Winnetka, Ill.) and Assistant Coach Mark Gangloff will swim June 25-29 at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The event serves as the qualification for the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, July 19-August 4, 2013. In order to qualify for the USA team for the 2013 FINA World Championships, swimmers must be one of the top two finishers in each of the Olympic events other than the 100 and 200 freestyle. The four highest finishers in the 100 and 200 freestyles will make the USA World Championship roster and the winner in each of the non-Olympic events will qualify.
Tierney will swim in five events during the event: the 50, 100 and 200 breast and the 50 and 100 back. He starts completion on Wednesday with the 200 breast, and will swim two events each on Thursday (50 breast and 50 back) and Friday (100 breast and 100 back). The sophomore became only the second male swimmer in Tiger history to earn All-America first team honors when he placed seventh in the 100 breast at the 2013 NCAA Championships. He also earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 200 breast. Tierney also holds Mizzou's 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM records (all short course).
Groome will take part in the 400 free on Friday, June 28. The sophomore holds Mizzou's 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 free marks.
Mizzou's first participant of the event,Grodecki swam the 100 free Tuesday morning and took 15th out of 42 entries with a time of 49.91. He will swim in the evening's B final at approximately 6:15 p.m. CT. In Mizzou's short course records, Grodecki ranks second all-time.
Gangloff, a two-time Olympian and three-time World Champion, will join Tierney in the 50 and 100 breast races. Gangloff currently holds the the American (26.86) and U.S. Open (27.34) records in the 50 LC meter breast and the U.S. Open and LC Nationals (59.01) marks in the 100 breast.
