Training Trip Daily Log
Jan. 5, 2008
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri men's swimming and diving team headed to Phoenix, Ariz., this week for its annual training trip. The team not only plans to spend a good deal of quality time in the pool, but also looks to get out and enjoy all that Arizona's capital city has to offer. Providing a glimpse of the Tigers' time spent in the Grand Canyon State is senior Brandon Lee in a daily journal.
Of his Saturday, Lee writes, "The day started with a warm breakfast at the hotel and then we headed off to the pool for the first practice of the day around 11:30 or so. It was cloudy and kind of chilly out. Practice was pretty much aerobic. The men lifted weights after our first practice and the girls lifted weights before practice. Once the men finished lifting we headed back to the hotel for a quick lunch around 3 p.m. and then it was back to the pool around 5:00 for the next practice. Let me tell you, it was a pretty quick turnaround. We started off with a stretch in the weight room because the weather was acting up on us. The sun went down and the rain started coming by the time we headed for the edge of the pool. It was pretty cold out there, around 45 degrees with a light rain. The water was around 80 degrees, but every stroke you took gave you chills throughout your body. The coaches looked like they were going snow skiing and we were wearing nothing but swimsuits. Practice was also the night of our meet. It was really cold and everyone had to get up and do one race. The problem was that it was freezing cold when you got out of the pool, so your muscles locked up as you jumped onto the block. Then we were expected to swim fast, which is really hard when your body it shaking from the cold. Overall, everyone swam really well. The coaches were pleased with our intensity, even though the weather was horrible. But the thing everyone learned from the experience was that regardless of the elements we face, we can still get up and race. It really makes us appreciate what we have at good old Mizzou. That's about all for Saturday.
