ATHENS, Ga. - In their first competition away from home this season, the Mizzou men's suffered a close 151-147 loss to No. 10 to Georgia Friday afternoon in Athens, Ga. The loss was the Tigers' first of the season, as the squad fell to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Southeastern Conference competition.
Leading the way for the Mizzou men were double-winners junior David Bonuchi and sophomore Sam Tierney. Bonuchi swept both the 1 and 3-meter springboards with scores of 362.02 and 367.50, respectively. Tierney led a one-two-three Tiger sweep in the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.59 and claimed the 200 breaststroke win with an NCAA `B' time of 1:59.46.
In the 200 backstroke, senior John Higgins out-touched sophomore Austin Fish to earn the victory. Higgins clocked a time of 1:47.89, just ahead of Fish's 1:47.94.
Sophomore Mack Darragh posted an NCAA `B' time of 1:47.49 to take top honors in the 200 butterfly. Darragh also finished second in the 100 butterfly with a swim of 49.88.
In the 200 medley relay, the Tiger team of Tierney, junior Mark Conroy, senior John Krause and sophomore Ramom Melo placed first with a time of 1:29.44. In the final event of the day, Mizzou's 400 freestyle relay squad of Tierney, freshman Max Grodecki and sophomore Igor Kozlovskij and Stephen Sobczak placed second in 3:01.16.
The Tigers are idle until they host the Mizzou Invite Nov. 29 - Dec. 1 at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
