Bonuchi finished first on the 1-meter with 787.10 points, almost 46 points ahead of the second place finisher. He posted 382.90 points in prelims and continued to build his lead in his final six dives in the finals round. This is Bonuchi's second career Zone D diving title, as he won the platform as a freshman in 2011.

Freshman Clark Thomas also advanced to finals and finished 10th overall with 635.25 points. He posted a score of 309.70 in prelims to enter finals in 12th place and moved his way up to 10th after 12 dives.

A five-time All-American, Bonuchi has now advanced to the NCAA Championships in his first three years as a Tiger. At last year's NCAA Championships, he earned runner-up honors on the platform and finished third and sixth, respectively, on the 3-meter and 1-meter. As a freshman in 2011, Bonuchi placed fourth on the platform and eighth on the 3-meter.

The Zone D Championships continue on Tuesday, March 12 with the men's 3-meter competition at 5:30 p.m.
