COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior David Bonuchi added a second SEC title to his collection with a victory in the men's 3-meter during finals action of the 2013 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday in College Station. Bonuchi also won the 1-meter on Tuesday.
The Tigers sit in seventh place with 344 points after day three.
Bonuchi, who was the top prelims qualifier, trailed by 17 points at the midway point in the event. He responded with a big 84.15 in the fourth and a 68.25 in the fifth to take over the top spot with one dive left. Bonuchi clinched the title with a dive of 83.30 in the final round to conclude the competition with a season high score of 441.95, over 36 points ahead of the second-place finisher.
This marks Bonuchi's second career 3-meter title, as he won the Big 12 crown last season. He will dive on the platform on Saturday with the chance to become just the fourth diver in SEC history to sweep all three events.
"It started off with two OK dives and I missed a third one," Bonuchi said. "That's the game. Diving is a sport where you either hit every dive or miss a couple. Our game plan really never changed; consistency throughout the competition. Making sure that our upness was at an optimum level, making sure I wasn't overexcited or under excited so I could put the best dive in the water."
"With great competitors in the SEC, it feels like hard work has paid off."
Back in the pool, junior Logan Mosley continued his stellar Championships competing in the 100 fly B final. Mosley broke his own school record with a 47.02 to take third in the consolation heat.
In the 400 IM, sophomore Mack Darragh notched a personal best swim of 3:48.15 to take fourth in the B final. Freshman Daniel Graviss was right behind Darragh in fifth place with a time of 3:49.80. Sophomore Connor Nolan swam in the C final and finished eighth in 3:53.72.
Sophomore Alex Glogoza closed out competition for the Tigers with a fourth-place finish in the 200 free in a time of 1:37.31.
The day four competition at the SEC Championships will resume on Friday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. for preliminaries and 6 p.m. for the finals session.
