The Missouri Golf Association (MGA) has announecd that Mizzou golfer Jace Long has been named the MGA Championship Player of the Year.

As the season comes to an end the Missouri Golf Association announces their players of the year. One player of year from Championship points and the other from Senior points. Each event they play in gets them points. It was a close race up until the end for Player of the Year. Jace Long is the championship Player of the Year and Steve Groom is the Senior Player of the year.

Jace Long of Dixon, Mo. currently plays for University of Missouri on the men's golf team. In the summer he played one of his best seasons yet. Entering only his sophomore year of college he shows a lot of potential in the game of golf. He captured Player of the Year by placing in the Missouri Open in September at home course The Club at Old Hawthorne. He won Player of the Year by only 50 points over Brian Haskell of St. Joseph. In June, at the Missouri Amateur he shot low rounds of the stroke play portion to earn medalist honors. Long carded an outstanding 64 on the second day to have the medalist honors by two strokes over local Brad Nurski at St. Joseph Country Club. Long made it to the semi-finals where he played defending Missouri Amateur Champion, Justin Bardgett from Chesterfield, MO. Both men played great rounds. Bardgett defeated Long by going birdie eagle on 16 and 17.

Long then qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links in Norman, OK. Long showed just how good of a golfer he was. Long finished in a tie for second in the stroke play portion, at 2 under par. Long and fellow Missourian, Todd Obergoenner, made it to Round of 16 in match play. Long only lost his match 1 down. To add to Long's list of accomplishments he placed in many other surrounding tournaments. Long made the cut at the MGA Stroke play at Dalhousie Country Club in Cape Girardeau through all the rain. He finished as runner up at the Stewart Invitational at Hickory Hills in Springfield, MO. He is a player that will continue to succeed in future golf tournaments.

Steve Groom was in a battle for Player of the Year with 2008 Senior Point Champion, Don Bliss all season long. Steve Groom took hold of the spot after the MGA Senior Amateur at The Country Club of Blue Springs in September where he was runner up. Prior to the Senior Amateur Groom placed in all the events he played in. Groom started his summer on the right foot. In May Groom played in the Stewart invitational and was Senior Champion. Groom placed second in the Ozark Invitational. Nothing slowed Groom down, placing 7th at the Phil Cotton Invitational, 4th in the Dawson Invitational, and 5th at the Mid-Amateur in St. Louis at Glen Echo Country Club.

MGA congratulates both Jace Long and Steve Groom on a season well done. We look forward to the camaraderie next year as new venues are being chosen. Check out mogolf.org for the 2010 schedule which will be up soon! Thanks to all players for a successful season.
