Columbia, Mo. -
Mizzou Men's and Women's Golf celebrated the grand opening of the Walsworth Family Golf Center Saturday morning with Tiger Scholarship Fund donors, Mizzou Athletics administration, former student athletes, fans, family and friends.
The opening was a historic day for Mizzou Golf and represents the growth and success of the men's and women's golf programs under head coaches Mark Leroux and Stephanie Priesmeyer.
The facility was made possible by the generosity of Don and Audrey Walsworth along with many others. The Walsworth family has always been strong supporters of the University of Missouri and Mizzou Golf. Don Walsworth and family, Athletic Director Mike Alden, Billy and Glenda Sapp and 1970 men's golf captain, Ben Thomas, were in attendance at the event.
The golf center is located at Mizzou's home course, The Club at Old Hawthorne. Mizzou Men's Golf will be hosting an NCAA Men's Golf Regional at the course in May.
Redshirt sophomore, Michelle Butler, spoke on behalf of the current Mizzou golf programs. Butler thanked donors and explained how this new state of the art facility will impact the Missouri golf programs.
"Our teams right now are leaving the footprints as the first program to be in this center and we intend to make history," Butler said. "We are ready to fill this center with championship trophies to leave a legacy for all future players to come through and golf at Mizzou."
The Walsworth Family Golf Center provides Mizzou Golf with an abundance of resources it previously did not have access to. The facility includes two indoor heated hitting bays, team locker rooms, team lounges, coaching offices, a swing pattern analysis video station, a private putting green and chipping area.
Next up for Men's Golf is the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday, in Birmingham, Ala. The next tournament for Mizzou Women's Golf is the Pat Bradley Invitational in Sarasota, Fla., Oct. 20-22. For more information on both programs and the Walsworth Family Golf Center, visit mutigers.com.
