KELLY TAKES RUNNER-UP HONORS AT THE U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Aug. 27, 2006
Already in the midst of a historical run at the 2006 U.S. Amateur Championship, Mizzou senior John Kelly attempted to add to his amazing week as he took on Richie Ramsay of Scotland in the Championship match on Sunday. However, the run would end as Ramsay claimed the U.S. Amateur Championship, with a 4&2 win in the 36-hole final match at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
Kelly, who was playing in his first U.S. Amateur, became the first Mizzou golfer ever to reach the final match. No other Tiger had even come close to accomplishing what Kelly did this week. By advancing to the final match, Kelly secured a spot in next year's Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club and U.S. Open at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club.
Over 7,000 amateurs entered the tournament and a field of 312 qualified to play this weekend at Hazeltine. On Sunday, only two were still in contention to win the championship.
After falling behind when Ramsay birdied the second hole of the day, Kelly answered with a birdie on the third hole. Ramsay regained the lead later in the round and held a 2-up lead after the first 18 holes of play.
Kelly birdied the second hole of the afternoon round to cut the lead to one, but could get no closer. Ramsay won back-to-back holes on the seventh and eighth to build a three-hole advantage. He would hold on for the win, as Kelly conceded the 16th hole to give Ramsay a 4&2 win.
Mizzou Head Coach Mark Leroux, along with several of Kelly's Tiger teammates, made the trip to Minnesota for this weekend's action.
On Saturday, Kelly defeated Ryan Yip 2&1 after claiming wins on Friday over Jon McLean (2&1) and two-time USA Walker Cup player Trip Kuehne (3&2) to advance to the final four.
The senior from St. Louis qualified for the U.S. Amateur by carding a two-round total of 141 at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa.
