Kelly Wins Opener in U.S Amateur Match Play Tournament

Mizzou senior John Kelly defeated Daryl Fathauer 3-up in the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. Kelly was 3-down after seven holes and was 2-down after 11 before winning four-straight holes and five of the final six.

Just 36 players remain in the tournament field. Kelly will face Eddie Olson at 8 a.m. on Thursday. Olson defeated Michael Schachner, 1-up, on Wednesday. The winner of the Kelly-Olson Match will play again Thursday afternoon for a chance to advance to the quarterfinal round.

Kelly advanced to the match play portion of the Championship by finishing 25th after two rounds of stroke play. There were 312 players in the field when play began on Monday.

The senior from St. Louis qualified for the U.S. Amateur by carding a two-round total of 141 at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa.

The U.S. Amateur champion receives an exemption into the 2007 U.S. Open and British Open and a probable invitation to play in the 2007 Masters Tournament.
