Manhattan, Kan. -
The University of Missouri men's golf team was defeated today by a score of 7-3 in the 2nd annual Cat Fight, held this year at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan.
This marked the 2nd straight year for the unique dual match, which featured match play for five golfers on each team. Each golfer played two rounds against an opponent, with a win counting as one team point, and a tie counting as one-half point. Kansas State claimed six matches outright, and tied two others, while Missouri won two and earned ties in two others.
Junior Mark McBride and freshman Mike Radek claimed MU's two wins on the day, as McBride defeated KSU's A.J. Elgert by four strokes (78 to 82), while Radek bested Matt Williams (81 to 84) in the morning round, to make the team score K-State 3, Missouri 2 heading into the afternoon round.
But the best Missouri could do was tie two of the five matches in the second round, with junior Chris Happ and freshman Brandon Knaub earning the pushes to account for the final team score.
Kansas State won its second straight Cat Fight title, as KSU earned the win last season at Eagle Knoll Golf Course in Ashland, Mo., on a scorecard tiebreaker after the teams tied 8-8 through regulation play.
Missouri returns to regular tournament play April 14-15 at the Branson (Mo.) Creek Classic, which will be the final tuneup prior to the 2001 Big 12 Championships, scheduled for April 23-24 at Prairie Dunes Golf & Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
