Mizzou had its first practice of the season Thursday.
Aug. 2, 2013
Mizzou Football opened camp for the 2013 season and the Tigers went through a brisk two-hour workout, in mild Mid-Missouri temps (84 degrees), on the Kadlec Practice Fields Thursday afternoon.
Although the team was not in pads for the initial practice, the intensity was high and the pace was quick as the team got together for the first time before the start of its second season in the Southeastern Conference.
The biggest news coming out of camp was the announcement of the team's four captains: James Franklin (QB), L'Damian Washington (Z-WR), E.J. Gaines (CB) and Andrew Wilson (LB). All four seniors are listed atop the depth chart at their respective positions and each performed like you would expect in practice No. 1.
While it was just the opening day, both Franklin and Washington appeared to have a strong rapport. The two helped move new offensive coordinator Josh Henson's offensive effectively and helped set the pace for an efficient opening practice. Franklin hit Washington on a nice pass down the sideline and came right back to his fellow senior a few plays later with a catch and run down the middle. It's early and the defense didn't have the pads on, but it was great seeing those two hook up early this fall.
Also a great sign for Tiger fans was the play of Henry Josey. One of college football's most exciting players two seasons ago, Josey appeared quick in the open field and gives Missouri a great three-headed option at running back along with Russell Hansbrough and Marcus Murphy.
Missouri returns to practice on Friday at 7:15 a.m. Fans are also reminded that Sunday is Fan Day at Memorial Stadium. The 11th annual event begins at 3:45 p.m. and the team and coaches will be on hand to sign autographs until 5:15 p.m. Admission is free!
