Columbia, Mo. -
University of Missouri junior QB Blaine Gabbert was named today to the Davey O'Brien Award Watch List, as announced Wednesday by The Davey O'Brien Foundation. Gabbert, who helped guide Mizzou to eight wins in his first year as a starter in 2009, was one of 30 standout signal callers named as prime contenders for the award, which goes annually to the nation's top collegiate quarterback.
Gabbert had an outstanding sophomore season a year ago, as he threw for 3,593 yards and 24 touchdowns and a pass efficiency rating of 140.45, which was second-best in the Big 12 Conference. In 13 starts, Gabbert completed 262-of-445 passes (58.9%), and he also ran for 204 yards and three touchdowns on the year, including a career-best 94 yards as he helped lead Mizzou to a comeback with over arch rival Kansas to close the regular season.
"This is a great honor, something I'm very excited for," Gabbert told mutigers.com. "I look at it from a team standpoint though, this is great for our whole program. We have high expectations for the season and we're just focusing on improving everything we can during the summer so that we can achieve everything we want to," he said.
Gabbert and his teammates are continuing their preparations for the 2010 season, which will begin with the Sept. 4th season-opener against Illinois in St. Louis, Mo. (11:30 a.m., televised on Fox Sports Net). Prior to that, fall two-a-days get underway in Columbia on Aug. 5th.
