Columbia, Mo. -
The Mizzou Tiger football team has high expectations for the upcoming 2010 season, and one of the more prestigious pre-season publications shares similar thoughts, as Athlon Sports has Gary Pinkel's team ranked No. 21 in its pre-season top-25 poll. The magazine announced the ranking today, as they continue to unveil their pre-season top-25 throughout the summer, until their magazine hits the newstands on June 1st.
Mizzou returns 17 starters from its 2009 squad which won eight games, despite being one of the youngest teams in the nation -- 34 of MU's top 44 players on its depth chart a year ago were either freshmen or sophomores. With a more experienced team coming back in 2010, hopes are high in Columbia, and for good reason, according to Athlon. Here's a sampling of what the magazine had to say about the Tigers' outlook...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Athlon Sports, publisher of the No. 1-selling college football magazine, continues the release of its preseason Top-25 poll at www.athlonsports.com. The countdown begins every year on May 1 and leads to the on-sale date of Athlon's category-leading preseason annuals.
Gary Pinkel's Missouri Tigers continue the countdown at No. 21 with nine players selected as All-Big 12 performers. Athlon Sports predicts Missouri will finish second in the Big 12 Conference's North Division. In the three year period from 2007-09, Athlon Sports led all other preseason football magazines in prediction accuracy.*
"The Tigers suffered some key losses on offense, but with Blaine Gabbert back running the show, this team will score a ton of points," says Athlon Sports managing editor Mitch Light. "...if the defense improves, Missouri could retake its spot at the top (of the Big 12 North)."
Athlon names kicker Grant Ressel Third-Team All-America. Offensive lineman Elvis Fisher and defensive lineman Aldon Smith join Ressel as All-Big 12 First Team members. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert, wide receiver Jerrell Jackson, center Tim Barnes and linebacker Will Ebner are named Second-Team All-Big 12. Offensive lineman Dan Hoch and cornerback Carl Gettis made the All-Big 12 Third Team.
Athlon Sports' preseason magazines hit retail locations June 1 with the Missouri Big 12 regional edition cover featuring Blaine Gabbert. Athlon's entire selection of regional editions and team-specific covers are available for pre-order at www.athlonsports.com/store.
Nashville-based Athlon Sports is a 43-year old integrated media company. It remains a leader in sports prediction accuracy and creating the most sought-after preseason content online and in magazines at the newsstand. The company serves business-to-business and business-to-consumer clients as a publisher, content provider and sports marketer through its portfolio of websites, sports magazines, direct marketing and events.
