COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri Department of Athletics, buoyed by strong seasons from its football and volleyball programs, finished 44th nationally in the final fall standings of the 2013-14 Learfield Directors' Cup Standings, as announced today by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Mizzou garnered a 5th-place finish ranking by football, thanks to the team's final USA Today Coaches' poll ranking after ending a magical season 12-2 and champions of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, as well as the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division.
Volleyball ended with a 17th-place showing in the Learfield standings, after reaching the finals of the Columbia Regional in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers finished the 2013 season with a school-record 35 wins, including a perfect 18-0 mark in conference play which brought home Mizzou's first-ever SEC team title.
Mizzou's 44th-place fall standing is the program's best since the 2007-08, when MU stood 35th after the final fall rankings. That season saw MU finish 38th overall, which stood as the best final ranking in the Learfield Cup until the next year, when the Tigers placed 36th in 2008-09.
Additionally, Mizzou's 44th-place fall standing ranks it 5th among SEC schools currently, behind only Arkansas (19th), Texas A&M (21st), Florida (29th) and South Carolina (42nd). The Tigers are ahead of Alabama (45th), Ole Miss (46th), Auburn (50th), LSU (53rd), Kentucky (58th), Vanderbilt (63rd), Georgia (68th), Mississippi State (133rd) and Tennessee (145th).
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 women's and 10 men's. The final Division I standings will be released in late June of 2014. For more information, please visit http://www.nacda.com/directorscup/nacda-directorscup-current-scoring.html
