COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Football's Justin Britt and E.J. Gaines have accepted invitations to play in the 89th East-West Shrine Game, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 18, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game that annually features some of college football's best players will kick off at 4 p.m. EST and be televised live on NFL Network.
The event benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children, an international pediatric specialty health care system.
Britt finished his final Tiger campaign in top form on Mizzou's offensive line, holding down the left tackle position for all 14 games of the team's Cotton Bowl Classic championship-winning season. A native of Lebanon, Mo., Britt and his offensive line counterparts helped the 2013 Mizzou offense set a program record with 3,330 rushing yards.
Gaines was a vital part of Mizzou's defensive secondary, finishing the season as the Tigers' interceptions leader with five pickoffs returned for a total of 17 yards. The Independence, Mo., native finished third on the team with 75 tackles (4.0 TFL) while missing 2.5 games due to injury in the middle of Mizzou's 2013 campaign.
Britt and Gaines are the 39th and 40th Tigers to head to the East-West Shrine Game, and the eighth and ninth to do so during head coach Gary Pinkel's tenure in Columbia.
Alums of the East-East Shrine Game have gone on to success at the next level, with 62 participants earning enshrinement in the NFL Hall of Fame. Currently, 52 players on active NFL rosters played in the game.
