Coaching: Is in his second tour of duty on the Missouri coaching staff, having spent the 1996 season as a graduate assistant coach at MU, working with the secondary. Returned to Mizzou for the 1999 season, replacing Jon Hoke, who is now the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida. Of his MU protiges, senior Julian Jones led the Big 12 Conference with six interceptions lst season.

Coached the defensive backs at San Jose State for two years. In 1997, his crew tied for seventh nationally with 20 pass interceptions, and the Spartans’ pass defense ranked 38th nationally, its highest finish of the 1990s. In 1998, San Jose State was 49th nationally in pass efficiency defense and had 13 interceptions. He completed an internship with the Seattle Seahawks in the summer of 1998 as part of the NFL’s Minority Fellowship program. He did the same this past summer with the Washington Redskins.

Stewart coached the tight ends at Northern Arizona in 1995, and moved over to coach DBs during spring practice in ‘96. Before returning to his alma mater, Stewart coached for two years at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He handled running backs his last year, after coaching the wide receivers in 1993. In ‘94, Cal Poly SLO won the American West Conference championship. Coached track on the high school level at Locke High in Los Angeles and led the boys’ team to the city title in 1991. His girls’ teams were city runners-up in both 1991 and ‘92.

Player: Completed his playing days as a cornerback at Northern Arizona in 1986. He later had NFL training camp experiences with the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons.

Personal: Holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and sociology from Northern Arizona (1995). His cousin, Phil Freeman, played for Larry Smith at Arizona. Wife, Kimberly, is a financial aid counselor for the University of Missouri.
