Superb athlete who will be playing linebacker for the second straight year and should provide a nice impact in 2005 ... Is in a battle for the top spot at the middle linebacker position entering the spring season.
Moved to defense, where he played 10 games, starting 5 of them, at strongside linebacker ... Started the first three games of the season, and had two more starts in the latter part of the season ... Had 15 tackles on the season playing in his new position, including a half-tackle behind the line of scrimmage ... Started his Mizzou career by making 4 tackles in the season-opening win against Arkansas State, then followed with a career-high 6 stops in week 2 at Troy ... Was named the team's most improved linebacker in the spring period.
Sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules, as he joined the team prior to the season after transferring from Michigan State with fellow Hazelwood East teammate Brandon Massey ... Spent the season on the offensive scout team as a tailback, and earned scout team MVP honors in practice leading up to the Illinois game.
Attended Michigan State, where he led the Spartans in rushing as a true freshman with 654 yards and 5 TDs on 133 carries (4.9 ypc) in 12 games ... Also caught 14 passes for 88 yards for Michigan State ... Began his collegiate career with a solid 11-carry, 93-yard rushing outing in the 2002 season opener vs. Eastern Michigan, and added a 38-yard TD run in the game ... Ran for a career-high 136 yards and 1 TD on 20 carries at Indiana, helping the Spartans to a 56-21 road win ... Romped for a career-long 48-yard run against the Hoosiers ... Had a solid game vs. Notre Dame, as he carried 15 times for 70 yards ... Had back-to-back games at Iowa and against Minnesota where he caught 4 passes out of the backfield.
Was one of the top players in the storied history of powerhouse Hazelwood East High School in St. Louis, where he was a four-year starter and prep All-American as both a linebacker and tailback ... Was named to USA Today's All-USA Team as a linebacker, and was also a SuperPrep, PrepStar and Student Sports Magazine All-American at running back ... Won Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior and was ranked among the nation's top five linebackers and running backs ... Earned Class 5A all-state honors and was St. Louis Post-Dispatch and St. Louis American Metro Defensive Player of the year in 2001 ... Recorded 87 tackles, including 3 sacks as a senior ... Also had 3 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions and 6 passes broken up ... Rushed for 1,009 yards on 117 carries and added 12 TDs as a senior while helping Hazelwood East to a 13-1 record an a state runner-up finish ... Accounted for 220 all-purpose yards against rival CBC (150 rushing, 70 receiving) and also scored twice and added 11 tackles ... Gaines 1,028 yards and scored 22 rushing TDs as a junior ... Had 56 tackles, with 2 sacks, and caused 3 fumbles in 2000 ... Produced 1,500 yards and 18 rushing TDs as a sophomore ... Scored at least 1 TD in a school-record 36 consecutive games ... Set Hazelwood East records for career rushing yards (4,000-plus) and TDs scored (60-plus) ... Became the first four-year starter in school history and the first underclassman voted team captain ... Helped his team to a combined record of 38-5 (.884) ... Started at defensive end as a freshman ... Was also a first-team all-conference basketball player who averaged 16.2 points and 10.4 rebounds as a small forward in 2000-01 ... Also lettered in track ... High school coach - Corey Johnson.
